John Bob Pettigrew, Fort Worth, Texas.

My brother Bob received a short deferment to finish high school. Shortly after high school graduation in 1944, he was drafted into the Army. He served in the 42nd Infantry Division in France and Germany. His unit was one that participated in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. In 1946 he was assigned to an Army Reserve unit until the beginning of the Korean conflict. The conflict started in June. Bob’s unit, Company C, First Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division, entered the fighting in Korea before Christmas, 1950. On January 5, 1951, Bob was taken prisoner. While on a march to the prison camps in North Korea, he died, March 6, 1951. His remains were never recovered.
