Fleetwood earned the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm, Virginia, depicted here in a sketch by William Ward, on 29 September 1864. According to the citation accompanying his Medal, Fleetwood “seized the colors, after two color bearers had been shot down, and bore them nobly through the fight.” (Library of Congress)
