Volunteer FAQs

When will the Museum open? The Museum is expected to open to the public in 2020 and will welcome visitors daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. with the exception of December 25th.

What type of activities will volunteers perform? Volunteers will have the opportunity to explore a variety of activities including, but not limited to, visitor services, special events, tours, education, gardening, and administrative support.

How old do I have to be to volunteer? The minimum age to volunteer is 18 years old.

Do you have a teen volunteer program? The minimum age to volunteer is 18 years old. In the future we may open volunteer opportunities to those under 18, so please be sure to check back for any updates.

Do I need to be an Army veteran to volunteer? No, we are looking to build a diverse volunteer group with a range of knowledge, expertise, and personal experiences.

Do I need a degree in history or any other field to volunteer? Do I need any specific prior work experience? No specific degree or work experience is required to volunteer. If you do have a specific skill or interest, please include it in your application.

Are there volunteer positions available for people with disabilities? Yes, we welcome all who want to volunteer. We will make every effort to match volunteers with suitable opportunities.

Are there ways to get involved if I cannot volunteer in person? At the moment the volunteer program is open to those who can volunteer in person. In the future we may offer other ways to volunteer.

Is there public transportation to the Museum? Yes, there will be public transportation options to travel to the Museum.

Is there parking available for volunteers at the Museum? There is free parking available at the Museum for visitors, volunteers, and staff.

What volunteer training is required? How long does training take? Similar to the Museum, the volunteer training program is currently under development. There will be approximately 20 hours of required training for all volunteers. Some volunteer positions may require additional, specialized training.

When will volunteer training begin? Volunteer orientation and training is expected to begin in the fall of 2019.

Can I set my own volunteer schedule? Is there a required time commitment? Volunteers can manage their schedule by selecting available shifts from the master schedule. We hope volunteers will schedule a minimum of eight hours per month.

Am I required to complete a background check? Yes, we will perform a criminal history record check as part of the application process. This is the standard check used if you were to visit a military installation.

I have submitted my application – what is next? Volunteer interviews will begin in late summer and orientation training will begin in the fall of 2019. We will keep in touch with applicants and share updates by email.

I would like to work for the Museum. How do I learn about paid employment opportunities? The United States Army will operate the National Army Museum and federal job opportunities will be advertised on usajobs.gov
